The present article investigates the beginnings of the Jitianu monastery, proposing some corrections to the more recent interpretations with regard to the role played by the Archimandrite Isaia of the Athonite monastery of Saint Paul. Both Romanian and Russian scholars had discussed Isaia’s pilgrimages, in-between Mount Athos, Bucharest, Moscow and Vienna. The reassessment of the beginnings and of the early history of the Jitianu monastery is largely based on a new corpus of documents found in the archive of Saint Paul monastery. These documents are edited in the appendix of this article. The Wallachian monastery of Jitianu was dependant of the Athonite monastery of Saint Paul, as the Moldavian monastery of Todireni was. The Athonite archive of Saint Paul also comprises some documents that significantly improve our historical knowledge of the Todireni monastery. This study is a preliminary work of a new edition of the Wallachian and Moldavian documents preserved in the archive of Saint Paul. This forthcoming volume will be a completely different one from the Greek edition published in 2002.

Prin acest articol am insistat asupra începuturilor mănăstirii Jitianu, propunând câteva îndreptări la unele ipoteze mai noi, şi asupra episodului, cunoscut şi discutat, şi în istoriografia românească şi în cea rusă, care l-a avut drept protagonist pe arhimandritul Isaia de la mănăstirea Sfântul Pavel, şi peregrinarea sa între Muntele Athos, Bucureşti, Moscova şi Viena, oferind în anexe şi câteva documente inedite, total sau parţial, pe care le consider edificatoare pentru începuturile şi pentru evoluţia mănăstirii Jitianu, metoc al marii mănăstiri de la Muntele Athos. Pentru celălalt metoc important de la nord de Dunăre, din Moldova, mănăstirea Todireni, am ales să trimit către câteva contribuţii istoriografice, mai vechi sau mai noi, care vor fi mult dezvoltate în volumul de documente româneşti din arhiva mănăstirii Sfântul Pavel de la Muntele Athos, aflat acum în stadiu avansat de editare, care va reprezenta o cu totul altă variantă decât cea publicată în limba greacă în 2002.
